Council Committee Barely Approves Dilworth Plaza Makeover

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Plans for a $50 million makeover of Dilworth Plaza at City Hall advanced out of a City Council committee, though barely so.

The Center City District, which is overseeing the Dilworth Plaza makeover, desperately wanted this Council committee approval now.  They fear that if the matter slips until next year, funding at the state level could be endangered when governor-elect Tom Corbett takes office.

But the committee vote was anything but a slam dunk, as Councilman Darrell Clarke raised questions about who will control Dilworth Plaza after the two-year rehabilitation. Public Property Commissioner Joan Schlotterbeck said the city will retain control:

"Everything remains under our jurisdiction. We're not giving away any of that. It's a public space."

The committee eventually approved the plan and a final vote could come next week, before the current governor, Ed Rendell, leaves Harrisburg.
