Corporate Support For Early High Schools
By Dr. Marciene Mattleman
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Early high school combines high school and college together in a six year program in which students can earn associates degrees. The Pathways in Technology early high school (P-Tech) in Brooklyn tailors its programs for jobs in technology in consultation with I.B.M.
Graduates in 2017 will have degrees in computer information systems or electromechanical engineering technology and five similar programs have been opened in Chicago with corporate partners in telecommunications and technology. Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, North Carolina and Tennessee have committed to such programs as well.
The Obama administration has recommended that Congress allocate more money for vocational, career and technical education promoting this approach.
Next year, New York City is planning to open two more schools using the P-Tech model, focusing on other growing industries, possibly including health care and the state Board of Regents is developing assessments for such programs that could substitute for one of the Regents tests.
