Corbett To Sign Bill That Prohibits Coverage For Abortions

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) - A spokeswoman says Governor Corbett will sign a bill that would prohibit coverage of most elective abortions from being offered by a federally-run health insurance exchange starting next year.
The state Senate sent the bill to Governor Corbett's desk on Wednesday. During floor debate, Republican Don White said taxpayer dollars are being used to fund the health insurance marketplace created by the new federal health care law.
"Therefore, Mr. President, it is imperative that we pass House Bill 818 and keep consistency in Pennsylvania regarding the use of taxpayer dollars for elective abortions."
White says the federal health care law gives states the power to make the decision. Philadelphia Democrat Larry Farnese opposes the bill.
"What we're doing here is really a back door attempt to deprive women of their legal right to an abortion."
The bill would allow coverage for abortions in cases of rape, incest, or if a mother's life is in danger.
