Cops: Suspect In Upper Darby Hit-Run In Police Custody

UPPER DARBY, Pa. (CBS) -- A suspect in a hit and run in Delaware County that left a man in critical condition had no license and may have been in the country illegally, police said.
Upper Darby Police say the suspect turned himself in at about 7 a.m. Friday and charges are pending.
The incident happened at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday along West Chester Pike in Upper Darby.
According to investigators, the driver of a minivan struck a man and fled the scene.
Shortly after 6 a.m. Friday, investigators located the van believed to be used in the incident.
According to Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood, sometime overnight, the passenger in the striking vehicle came to the police station and identified the driver.
Chitwood said at about 7 a.m., the suspect surrendered to police. The suspect's name was not immediately released. Chitwood said the driver did not have a driver's license and may have been in the United States illegally.
Chitwood adds, "These hit and runs, whether they are fatal or serious injuries, the operator of the vehicle fleeing are disgusting. And these individuals who commit these types of crimes should be punished as though it were a murder with a gun, or a knife, or an aggravated assault or attempted murder, because this is ridiculous."
The victim was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he is listed in critical condition.
