Cops: Delaware Man Left Child, 3, In Locked Car To Attend College Class
NEWARK, Del. (CBS) – A man was arrested after police say he left his young child locked in a car while he attended classes at the University of Delaware.
Rafig Gurbanzada, 32, of Newark, Delaware, is facing charges after the incident that occurred at about 12:50 p.m. Tuesday.
According to investigators, two passers-by walking in the 100 block of South College Avenue heard the sounds of a crying child and observed a small child unattended in a car parked at a parking meter.
The child was crying and banging on the window of the car, whose doors were locked with the windows cracked. The passers-by had the child unlock the vehicle so that the door could be opened and then contacted Newark Police.
Newark Police responded to the scene and found the child to be three-years-old.
While police were at the scene investigating, Gurbanzada returned back to the car at about 1:50 p.m.
Officers learned that Gurbanzada had left the child locked in the vehicle at approximately 12:15 p.m. while he attended class at the University of Delaware.
The young child was evaluated on scene and was found to have no injuries.
The high temperature in Newark on Tuesday was 84.
The Delaware Division of Family Services were contacted and the child was eventually released to the child's mother.
Gurbanzada was charged with Reckless Endangering and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. He was released on $2,000 unsecured bond.
