Cool, Cloudy Start To The Week
By Geoff Bansen
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Do you take your morning coffee with half and half? If so, you need look no further than Monday's forecast. But it won't be like that for the entire region; it's either all, some or nothing in terms of sunshine.
Looking at the satellite this morning is almost like looking at a split-screen. Along the shore, you're socked in with lots of clouds. Around the Philadelphia area, you have some clouds, some brighter skies. And up in the Poconos, you're waking up to beautiful conditions with clear skies. Today is all about location, location, location.
On the temperature front, the numbers are certainly lower than they have been. They will be just a few degrees below average for this time of year, but certainly comfortable.
Off to the south, a coastal area of low pressure is what is responsible for the cloud cover. As it continues to move north, it will bring in the chance of showers later tonight into Tuesday. The closer to the coast, the better you will be under gray skies, and the more likely you are to see a few showers.
Wednesday should bring a return to some sunshine, and on Thursday we'll be tracking the next cold front coming in from the west.
Today's Highs:
Philly -- 79
Shore -- 75
Poconos -- 70
On This Day In Weather History:
1769 - One of the more destructive storms of the century moved close to the Mid Atlantic coast, causing much damage from wind and flood.
1850 - A hurricane moved north offshore of the Mid Atlantic coast, causing many ships to be in distress off the Delaware Capes. The U.S. "Relief," 140 miles east of Atlantic City, reported a pressure of 29.18" on the night of the 7th to 8th. This was the 3rd storm of what is known as the Triple Tropical Storms of 1850. The 1st was on July 19th and the 2nd was on August 25th.
1889 - Although a Great Hurricane did not begin to rage until the 10th, its imminent arrival was announced by a sudden and damaging tidal wave around 430 pm, which slammed into LI and the Jersey shore. The hurricane itself was located in the Atlantic ocean, well off the coast of VA.
1987 - A tropical depression off the coast of SC brought another round of heavy rain to the Mid Atlantic Coast. Showers and thunderstorms produced extremely heavy rain in Eastern PA, where flooding caused more than 55 million dollars across a seven county area.
