Controversial Brain Shrinkage Study
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - There is a controversial study from the University of California at Davis which looks at brain shrinkage.
The researchers found that certain lifestyle choices were associated with greater shrinkage of the brain as people age. These factors include obesity and high blood pressure.
The controversy is over the fact that some are saying high blood pressure and obesity lead to brain shrinkage -- this has not been proven. What has been shown is that there is an association.
The reason why we have concerns about brain shrinkage is because we have concerns about memory and judgment issues with brain shrinkage. This is a condition that has been associated with repeated concussions. In fact, the brains of NFL football players are being studied for this connection.
This much I can tell you, watching diet and controlling high blood pressure have many other advantages that are crucial to good health -- so don't worry about this study.
