Consumer Report: Shipping Pallet Safety

by CBS3's Jim Donovan for KYW Newsradio 1060

New sanitary tests are raising troubling questions about the roughly two billion shipping pallets used to transport products in the US.The National Consumers League examined 140 wooden and plastic pallets stored behind grocery stores in Texas and Florida.

About 33 percent of the wooden pallets tested showed signs of unsanitary conditions, where bacteria could easily grow.

Ten percent tested positive for E. coli, and 2.9 percent had evidence of Listeria.

National Consumer League executive director Sally Greenberg says the findings indicate our food supply could be at risk:

"We think our results are alarming because we're talking about, when you do the math, many millions of pallets being contaminated."

The FDA says it will review the test results.
