Construction Closes Section Of SEPTA's Media-Elwyn Line
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Passengers on SEPTA's Media-Elwyn line are going to have to deal with service delays this summer.
A construction project has shut down train service between Elwyn and Swarthmore, and commuters need to use shuttle buses to get to those stops.
SEPTA Spokesman Andrew Busch says the project should wrap up in the beginning of September, and involves long-needed repairs to the bridge at the Crum Creek Viaduct:
"The bridge itself dates back to the late 1800s so this was a critical infrastructure project for SEPTA."
Allison takes the train from the Elwyn station into Philadelphia for work, but now the shuttle bus is adding a half hour each way to her commute:
"It's an earlier day and a later night, but it's only for the summer and I'll survive."
Phil commutes from Elwyn to Center City. He's not thrilled with the extra commuting time, but he says it beats the alternatives:
"I mean it kinda is what it is. It's better than driving still. It's cheaper. It's just you get up earlier, spend the same amount of time at work and you come home later, so it's just a longer day."
SEPTA has crews at the stations to help direct passengers, and there won't be a charge for parking at the affected station during the construction.
Passengers are advised to allow at least an extra 20 minutes for their commute.
