Congresswoman Mia Love: 'Republicans Are Missing The Boat Here'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Dom Giordano talked to Utah Congresswoman Mia Love on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington DC.
Love called out Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for splitting the bill funding the Department of Homeland Security while defunding President Obama's executive action on immigration that the House of Representatives passed last month.
"Republicans are missing the boat here. I was so incredibly proud in January when we passed the Homeland Security funding bill and defunded the executive act by the President. I was so excited that we were able to say, 'we are going to defund this President's unconstitutional policy that he is pushing through.' I am telling you that I am standing strong. I would like to just say that we have a leader in the Senate that is supposed to do his job and get the six votes that he needs in order to get this bill passed and if he can't do it, we need to get somebody else to do it."
She said that, since taking office, her main focus has been to eliminate unnecessary laws and red tape that get in people's way.
"I think what I'm most engaged in is more undoing that doing. There's so much layers of bureaucracy and control over the American and it's under the guise of 'listen to us and we'll take care of you. We'll take of everything because if you leave it up to the private sector, they're going to take advantage of you," which is absolutely ridiculous. I always use this phrase, this old saying in law, 'what was meant to be used as a shield shall not be used as a sword." They're taking control of the lives of the American people under the guise that this is a shield, but it's actually a weapon used against people to keep them completely dependent on government."
She stated she believes it is the government's duty to let people run their own lives.
"You have to ask yourself, 'do these policies, what's being introduced, does it give me more control or does it take away control? Does it give me more of an ability to take control of what I say, what I do, my personal responsibility or does it put the responsibility and the control into the hands of somebody else?' And, I'm telling you, I always err on the side of the American people."
