Community Mourns Death Of 16-Year-Old Killed In Bathroom Assault
WILMINGTON, De. (CBS) -- Students at Howard High School, in Delaware, continue to mourn the loss of a classmate who was allegedly fatally assaulted in the bathroom by other students.
Still no arrests have been made in the case. Wilmington Police reassured people on Friday that they are working on this with their homicide unit as well as Delaware State Police's forensics unit.
All day, people stopped by a growing memorial for Amy Joyner-Francis. A lot of them were calling for justice for Amy.
For the second evening, the community came together around Howard High School in Wilmington where Joyner-Francis died after an attack in the girls bathroom.
"It's crazy because something like this has to happen people to actually realize what they're doing to themselves and for them not to help that girl like that...ya'll letting this happen. Ya'll letting death happen," said Atiyya Wilkes, a student at Howard High School.
Officials say at least two girls were involved in the alleged assault that took the 10th grader's life on Thursday morning. So far there is no official word on how she was killed. Police say there were no weapons involved.
As shocked members of the community wait to learn about what happened, one thing they know is that kids need to hear over and over again that violence isn't the answer.
"It touches my heart and my spirit so that we keep losing our children and burying our children every week, or every other week to senseless violence. This is another stab in the heart for me," said Angelique Lum of River of Life Church.
School let out early on Friday so a lot of people were able to stop by the memorial for Amy. Adults in the community have stopped by to counsel students and talk with them as they call for a stop to violence.
