Community Leaders Speak Out Against Gun Violence In Point Breeze, Grays Ferry
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A number of community leaders spoke at a press conference Friday afternoon to respond to the gun violence that has plagued the Point Breeze and Grays Ferry section of the city since mid-September.
Police say more than a dozen people have been shot, including a 2-year-old girl. (see related story)
State Representative Kenyatta Johnson, Senators Larry Farnese and Anthony Williams and 17th Police District Captain Anthony Washington are just a few of the leaders who spoke at an anti-violence press conference in South Philadelphia. Johnson says the goal was to provide support to the shell-shocked community:
"Let's put a united front to let those in our community know that we are standing with them when it comes to addressing these senseless incidents of violence."
Johnson is working with key stakeholders and will initiate an action plan that includes beefed up police presence, enforced curfews and collaboration with city administration. But he says the leaders will need community support.
"We need the community to come up and step up to the plate. If you see something, say something."
He says the police and DA's office will protect witnesses who come forward. Johnson says they are also working with the Citizens Crime Commission to offer reward exchange information related to the recent crime spree. So far, the commission has raised more $7,000.
