Community Gathers For Sandy Service Day
SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. (CBS) - The first of two service days set aside to mark the one year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy took place Saturday throughout the New Jersey shore.
Thousands of volunteers up and down the New Jersey coastline spent their day helping others.
Inside the Seaside Heights Firehouse that was filled with water a year ago, volunteers built a break room.
"Great group of guys so far that worked with all of them are here," volunteer John Donvito said. "They stood on watch the whole time helping people in their community. It's great to give back to them and give them a better space for living."
Over at Island Beach State Park, volunteers built new lifeguard stands and storm fences, and they also cleaned up the beach.
Jersey Cares and the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund teamed up to host the service day.
