Comfort Dogs Help Heal Heartbroken At Dallas Police Memorial
DALLAS (CNN) -- Over at Dallas Police headquarters, there were moments of gratitude, prayer, and grief. Hundreds came to mourn at a memorial that has grown into a mountain.
But in the sorrow shared by police officers and civilians, some furry friends were there to console the brokenhearted.
"We started the Canine Comfort Dog Ministry in August of 2008 with four dogs, and today we are in 23 states and over 130 dogs," Tim Hetzner with LCC CANINE Comfort Dog Ministry.
According to the ministry, the dogs use their sixth sense to help heal those who have gone through a tragedy.
"A lot of hurting people, and I think the dogs bring that type of comfort. When you pet a dog, it helps relax you and helps people to let their emotions out and to talk about what they've gone through, and that's a key part in the healing process," Hetzner said.
The group has been deployed to places like Sandy Hook and most recently Orlando. Tuesday, six canines were comforting folks at DPD.
"The people here are strong, and they are not going to let something like this destroy them. In fact, they are going to be stronger."
