Come On Irene!
By Seth Everett
I have to admit, when I agreed to do this blog, I never thought I'd be writing about weather as much as I have in the last week. Hurricane Irene is descending on the Delaware Valley and the Phillies are hosting the Florida Marlins at Citizens Bank Park.
While there are multiple links on this website to find out about the latest weather, I want to discuss the Phillies options in terms of this 3 game series starting Friday night.
The rain is supposed to be heavy and start at some point Saturday. It could be anywhere from the afternoon to late in the evening. Its not supposed to stop until Monday. The only saving grace, is that the Nationals aren't in charge of this series, since they bungled last week (cheap shot, but I couldn't resist).
Unless the weather patterns change, I have a radical suggestion. The Phillies should play Sunday's game on Friday at 1pm, as part of a split-doubleheader. It would be an inconvenience for the players, the management, and the fans, but worth it in the long run.
Friday's regularly scheduled night game could come off without a hitch. Then, Saturday, let's play it safe and move the start time to 1pm from 7pm. That way, the team can be on its way to Cincinatti before the storm ever hits Philadelphia.
This plan could save the Phillies a lot of aggravation in September when their focus should be on the upcoming post-season.
Let me know what you think about this plan BEFORE the rain comes. I'll be hosting "Inside Pitch" & "Extra Innings" on the new Talkradio 1210 WPHT all weekend, weather permitting. I'll also be hosting my final "Baseball Show" on Sportsradio 610 WIP Saturday from 8-10am. Reach me on Twitter @seth_everett.
