Comcast's Internet Essentials Program Wants More Philadelphia Families To Connect
By Ian Bush
Philadelphia (CBS) – Comcast is expanding its effort to help low-income families get online.
The cable giant's Internet Essentials program has gotten more than 40,000 families connected to the web, but "we have a lot of work to do," says Charles Douglas, senior director of corporate communications at Comcast.
Douglas says only about 500 Philadelphia families have signed up -- and many, many more are eligible for the discount.
"Internet service is available for $9.95/month. You have the ability to purchase an Internet-ready computer for $150 and a whole suite of digital literacy training materials: how to shop, how to look for a job."
It's now open to families with kids in the free and reduced-price school lunch programs, and Comcast promises to double the speed of the Internet connection.
