Comcast Funds Major Computer Lab Upgrade At 3 Philly Rec Centers
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Comcast has come through with a contribution to put state-of-the art technology into three recreation centers throughout Philadelphia.
The Philly-based company announced its $105,000 gift on Wednesday to buy three 3-D printers, educational software and partially fund staff for rec center computer labs.
"Technology like 3-D printers are driving the next frontier, right?" asks Comcast's Michael Soileu. "I mean you're creating body parts and even food today with 3-D printers. So, to have that available to kids and adults who visit the rec center is just awesome."
Ben Burenstein, who oversees the computer labs at the rec centers, says the Comcast contribution opens a whole new world:
"You can see right now the kids are looking at the 3-D printers captivated by the options that they offer. I think it really stretches people, it'll help with their school work and it'll help them beyond their school work. It lets them express their creativity."
The printers and software will be placed in computer labs in the Kingsessing Rec Center in Southwest Philadelphia, Columbus Square Rec Center in South Philadelphia and the Tustin Rec Center in West Philadelphia.
