Colorado Couple Accused Of Flying Drugs Into Montgomery County
BLUE BELL, Pa. (CBS) - Montgomery County authorities have two Colorado residents in custody on drug charges and they seized a single engine plane in connection with an investigation into methamphetamine sales in the Philadelphia area.
Prosecutors say their investigation led them to 51-year-old James Handzus and his 41-year-old girlfriend Tamara Vincent, both of Rifle, Colorado. Police say the two were using the single engine Piper to import large quantities of methamphetamine into Montgomery County.
Police set up a sting operation and arrested the pair outside a Plymouth Meeting restaurant where they were allegedly selling the drugs to an undercover detective.
"From the west coast and from the Midwest, there are drug traffickers who are looking to establish markets and they are looking to the east coast as a potential expansion of their business and what we looked to do here was stop that flow," District Attorney Risa Ferman said.
Police say the pair picked up the drugs in Las Vegas and then flew into Wings Field where the plane was confiscated. Ferman says police used social media to learn their travel plans. Handzus and Vincent are behind bars on $500,000 cash bail.
