Colleges Take On Veterans' Issues
By Dr. Marciene Mattleman
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It's good to learn that several higher education institutions have developed initiatives that are helping veterans transition to civilian society.
Syracuse's Whitman School of Management has established a boot camp, training wounded veterans to run their own businesses. The federal small business administration is helping with replication for female veterans.
A graduate social work program at the University of Southern California has developed a military-specific curriculum, tracking monthly those who have returned from deployment to inform the curricular subjects.
Purdue's Military Family Research Institute focuses on combat trauma, traumatic brain injuries and suicide prevention. It recently coordinated the state's first Homeless Veteran's Summit to connect campus-veteran groups.
At the Odum Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a federally-funded program has instructed more than 4,000 service providers in all 50 states on how to work with veterans, particularly those in rural areas.
