Colleges Should Require Business 101 For All Students
By Dr. Marciene Mattleman
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - While the Labor Department reported our unemployment rate at 7.8% for December, even more alarming is a report from Generation Opportunity, placing the unemployment rate for those under 30 at 11.5 percent.
That number includes college-educated and other young adults and Matt Ragas, an assistant professor at DePaul University is discouraged, believing professors and students alike need better opportunities, that liberal arts and sociology majors are missing something critical.
Ragas is not negating philosophy, but believes it's not enough; employers indicate that they need graduates with basic business sense, perhaps Business Basics for Social Sciences.
Marquette University offers a Business Foundation for students in its College of Communications.
Ragas in his article in The Chronicle of Higher Education, quoting Gallup, says the economy remains the number one issue in the country, followed by the lack of jobs. All employers - small and large - want graduates who have had some exposure to budgets. Business 101 is vital for their futures.
