College Student Jams On Stage With 'The Boss' During Philly Show
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- For many, simply seeing Bruce Springsteen in concert would be an unforgettable experience. But for one lucky fan, it was what happened during the show that he'll remember forever.
Two days after Springsteen and the E Street Band treated the tens of thousands of fans at Citizens Bank Park to the longest show in U.S. history, they rocked the stage again. But it took only one song Friday night to give a college student from Houston, Texas the gift of a lifetime.
Matthew Aucoin, a student at Texas A&M, says Springsteen had just wrapped up a performance of 'Rosalita' when he held up a sign asking if The Boss would perform the song "No Surrender" with a "college kid." A few moments later, class was in session.
"I just stuck this sign in [Springsteen's] face, and he and Stevie [Van Zandt] read it," Aucoin said. "Bruce was like thinking about it, thinking about it, and he looked up at my dad and said 'can he play it?' My dad said 'he can play it,' and I was saying 'I can play it, I can play it.' After that, Bruce just gave me the wave and I hopped on stage, and it was incredible."
Aucoin grabbed a guitar and jammed alongside Springsteen for nearly six minutes. He played up to the crowd and even ad-libbed the lyrics at one point to give Philadelphia a shout out.
"I got up there and I looked at the crowd. It was the time of my life," the young guitarist said. "I can see why [Springsteen] loves playing in Philly. Great fans. It was amazing. The fact that he trusted me, and I didn't realize how well I did until after the show and I watched the video and saw how in sync me and Bruce's moves were at some key parts of the song."
To cap off an already amazing moment, after the performance, Springsteen gave Aucoin a hug, a few words of encouragement, and posed for a selfie.
Not bad for a young man's first trip to the 'Streets of Philadelphia.'
