PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Phillies' pitcher Cole Hamels was recognized today by a former Phillies' all-star and pitching mentor for Hamels' work off the baseball diamond.
Retired pitcher Jamie Moyer now spends his time working with a foundation bearing his name. It helps young people by offernig grief counseling camps and camps for those learning to cope with a loved one's drug addiction.
Today, Moyer presented the first "Legends" Award on behalf of his foundation to Hamels.
"I tip my hat to Cole, and not just Cole -- Cole and his wife, Heidi, who are giving back here, not only in the community of Philadelphia but around the world, helping kids."
Hamels credits Moyer and his own family with helping him to realize there's more to life than baseball.
Hamels says his own foundation's focus on education gives young people a chance to find their own path to success.
"They're not given those opportunities," he says, "and so I think that's kind of what we're trying to reach out as -- just to give them a chance and to send a message of hope."
