Clinton's Speech Draws Praise From Delegates
By Larry Kane
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (CBS) - In the roar of the crowd, and the chaos of emotion, Bill Clinton delivered the speech of a lifetime, filled with tremendous emotion, and amazing clarity.
"Are we where we want to be today?" Clinton asked. "No. Is the President satisfied? No. Are we better off than we were when he took office? With an economy in free fall, we were losing 750,000 jobs a month. Are we doing better than that today? The answer is yes!"
It was a lesson in how to argue a point from a master who offered a view of unselfish oratory. It was the kind of speech Republicans hoped that Chris Christie had made for Mitt Romney.
"In Tampa the Republican argument against the President's re-election was actually pretty simple, pretty snappy," he said. "It went something like this: We left him a total mess, he hasn't finished cleaning it up yet, so fire him and put us back in."
To the staunchest Democrat and the most faithful Republicans, it was a lesson in the art of communication.
Pennsylvania delegates, delirious about the speech, get more excitement this morning from a stop in by Joe Biden who is here at the delegation hotel. You have to wonder if Biden will address his and the President's role in reversing the party platform that erased the word God, and eliminated Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. That controversy may stick for a while.
