City-Run Summer Day Camp Wraps Up in Northeast Philadelphia
By Steve Tawa
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- More than 2,000 children had an "all-day play day" today in Northeast Philadelphia, to show off the sports skills that they learned this summer.
At Vogt Playground, in the city's Tacony section, 8- to 12-year-olds celebrated the end of the six-week "Philly Play" summer camp series by going head-to-head in a variety of sports and activities.
"Playing kickball!"
"Soccer!"
"Jumprope!"
"Softball!"
"Basketball!"
"Baseball!"
"Hockey!"
"Swimming!"
Throughout the summer at their neighborhood recreation centers and playgrounds, these kids were supervised by sport-specific coaches, staff, and others.
At Vogt Rec Center, Mike Goings (community relations director for the Philadelphia 76ers) and his staff put the kids through their paces on the basketball court.
"We are teaching them the fundamentals -- shooting, passing, dribbling, and more importantly, just having fun," he said.
Councilman Bobby Henon (below left), who organized Philly Play and the effort for kids to have 60 minutes of daily structured play time, was grateful to all sponsors and volunteers.

"And each little person is going to leave with two Sixers tickets to a specific game," Henon noted.
