City of Philadelphia Coming Into High-Speed Internet Age At Last, Official Promises
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - If you think your Internet access is slow, try the City of Philadelphia's system.
City workers regularly complain about snail's-pace load times, and the issue came up today at a City Council hearing.
The question from Council president Anna Verna was to the point:
"Can someone explain why are we are still having a problem with the Internet?"
Verna was referring to the exceedingly slow Internet access provided to thousands of city workers.
The answer, from interim chief information officer Thomas Jones, is that speed is on its way.
"The city actually only has one very low-speed connection. We have ordered and have in place two additional connections that are about 18 times as fast," he told Verna.
But still to come is about a half-million dollars in equipment to handle the faster speeds. Jones hopes to have a faster network for city workers in two months.
