City Of Philadelphia Closes For A Second Day As Street Cleanup Continues

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- In Philadelphia, officials are breathing a sigh of relief that the overnight accumulation did not cause widespread problems. And they stand by their decision to close city government today.
Samantha Phillips, Philadelphia's director of emergency management, says downed trees had been a big concern given the freezing and thawing that went on yesterday.
But only about a dozen trees throughout the entire city went down as a result of the storm, and that meant power outages were minimal.
Phillips says even if Philly is in relatively good shape, closing the city government was a good idea.
"There's still a lot of snow on the streets, still a lot of snow on sidewalks and cleaning that needs to be done. So, the more vehicles we keep off the streets allows the Streets Department and their contracted support to do their work."
City plow trucks and salters are still out cleaning up the mess. The city's snow emergency expired at 2 p.m. Friday.
