City Kids Get a Hot-Weather Treat: Kayaking On The Delaware River
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Some inner city Philadelphia kids experienced a new way to cool off today, thanks to a program that got them kayaking on the Delaware River.
There was lots of enthusiasm as campers from the Vare Recreation Camp in West Philadelphia jumped into kayaks and "water swans" -- some of them for the first time in their lives -- to paddle around the Delaware River Marina.
It's a program created by the Pennsylvania Environmental Council and the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation to give hundreds of Parks and Recreation Center campers a chance on the river.
"It's to show the kids that the environment exists here in Philadelphia; that you don't have to drive a long distance to get to the environment," says Jessica Anderson, with the Pennsylvania Environmental Council.
One youngster, Hassan, 17, was a little nervous.
"I'm okay with going out there in deep water with my peers," he said warily.
