City Gears Up For Sunday's Broad Street Run

by Natasha Brown

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia is gearing up for this weekend's Broad Street Run, and the city is making sure to take every precaution.

Friday morning work crews removed trash cans from the race route, a safety measure to prevent potential hiding spots for explosives.

"We are doing everything in our power to make sure that the city of Philadelphia has a fun, safe, successful and enjoyable race on Sunday," said Mayor Michael Nutter.

Meanwhile at Lincoln Financial Field runners waited in a lengthy line to pick up their race bibs.

Many of them praised the beefed up security.

"I think it puts other people at ease it makes me a little more calm.  I understand why they are doing it," said Evelyn Sorto.

"There's so many people in race they have to be careful in procedures and they've done a great job today being able to be up to date to be able to increase the number of people running and run safely," said Judy Trichon.

Among the new safety protocols extra police along the ten-mile route,  a ban on backpacks and coolers at the navy yard finish line, and gear must be brought in a clear plastic bag.

Even with all the extra steps, runners say competing in the race sends an important message to terrorists.

"I think it's more empowering to join together and to take a stand against things like that.  People that want to take away our freedoms and this is like the best we can do, just join together.  I think security will be fine," said Lisa Prendergast.
