City Celebrates Science In April

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A few of the details are being released about the events to be featured during Philadelphia's first ever city-wide science festival.

The Philadelphia Science Festival will take place April 15th through the 28th. For two weeks, the city will celebrate science and offer many different educational experiences for Philadelphians of all ages.

African Cats, another Disneynature film, will make its Philadelphia premiere at the Franklin Institute one day before its nationwide release on Earth Day. African Cats tells the stories of a family of lions and a family of cheetahs. Paul Baribault, head of Disneynature films in the U.S., said, "What's most exciting about this film is that these stories that you're seeing on-screen are all true."

How about a Murder Mystery Night with a close up look at forensic science at work? Antoinette Thwaites is a Philadelphia forensic scientist and founder of the Association of Women in Forensic Science. She says one purpose behind the event - wiping out what she calls 'The CSI Effect.' "We just want to break the myths of some of the tests and things done on CSI (the TV show) that are not necessarily done in the lab," Thwaites said.

There's also a Science Story Slam organized by First Person Arts. Karina Kacala says anything could happen. "I don't think that people are going to get up there and talk about their science papers from school," Kacala said. "But people have had some interesting experiences with science or simply the scientific theory of trying things out for the first time."

A free open air carnival on Logan Circle kicks off the Festival April 16th with hands on interactives and family friendly activities. There will also be science cafes, food science events, and science based performances. For more information go to PhilaScienceFestival.org.
