Gov. Christie Urges Homeowners Recovering From Sandy To Beat Grant Deadline
LITTLE FERRY, N.J. (AP) — There's federal grant money available for New Jersey homeowners recovering from Superstorm Sandy, and Gov. Chris Christie wants to make sure it gets spent.
Christie urged homeowners to apply for the grants before Thursday's deadline.
The governor appeared at a news conference Tuesday in Little Ferry, site of widespread flooding from the Hackensack River. Several thousand homes in the area suffered major or severe damage.
The $10,000 grants are for non-construction expenses such as rent for temporary housing or furniture replacement. Homes must be a primary residence and have suffered at least $8,000 in damage.
Christie told the crowd that about 11,000 homeowners are scheduled to receive the grants. But he hopes to have them distributed to 16,000 by the end of the program.
