Christie To Announce $202 Million Union Beach Storm Project
UNION BEACH, N.J. (AP) — Gov. Chris Christie has announced a new storm protection project for one of the areas worst hit by Superstorm Sandy.
The Republican governor joined with state Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin to announce a $202 million flood control project for Union Beach on Wednesday. The project will include the construction of thousands of feet of levees and flood walls as well as tide gates and pump stations.
It will also fund the rebuilding of beaches and dunes and restore acres of wetlands.
Christie's office says the majority of funding will come from the federal government. New Jersey and Union Beach will split the remaining costs.
The project was designed more than a decade ago and work was underway when Sandy hit. It has since been modified.
