Christie Leads Groundbreaking For New Cancer Center in Camden, N.J.

By John McDevitt

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) -- New Jersey governor Chris Christie joined Democrats, including state senate president Stephen Sweeney (second from left in photo), in a groundbreaking ceremony today for the new Cooper Cancer Institute building in Camden.

"This is another $100-million investment in this city and this region," the governor said.

But the bigger part of the story than his support of the project, he said, "is that this community has come together to speak loudly and clearly for what its members need and deserve, and was willing to work hard to make it happen."

The institute will open its doors in 18 months, making services and specialists available under one roof instead of in scattered offices.

Across the street, a small but loud group protesting some of Christie's policies could be heard by those in attendance inside the white tent where the ceremony was taking place.
