Christie: Atlantic City Vote Could Come Soon
TRENTON, NJ (CBS) - Efforts aimed at boosting tourism and gaming in Atlantic City may be at a critical stage. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie suggests an agreement with legislative leaders could be reached in time for those efforts to be approved in time for Christmas.
Negotiations continue between Christie and State Senate President Steve Sweeney, with the Governor optimistic they could come to terms over, among other things, setting up state-controlled districts around the 11 casinos on the boardwalk and in the marina. That could allow a senate vote to come as soon as Monday.
As for the assembly, Christie says, "I'm still hopeful, really hopeful, that the Assembly would be willing to come back on Monday. I don't know why they're unwilling to come back. I wish they would."
Issues in dispute center on changing the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority which, if Democrats get their way, would control the districts. They also want a $30 million subsidy for racetracks to boost purse money over three years to help that beleaguered industry.
