Christie, Atlantic City Mayor Engage In War Of Words
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Atlantic City's Democratic mayor is responding sharply to Gov. Chris Christie's attack on the city government.
The Republican governor told a town hall in Morris County on Wednesday that Atlantic City is "one of the most god-awful, wasteful municipal governments in America." He also said Mayor Lorenzo Langford "has no idea what he's doing."
Langford responded by calling Christie a hypocrite.
In a statement Langford accused Christie of wasteful spending and incompetence. He cited the governor's use in 2011 of a state police helicopter to attend his son's high school baseball games. Christie later agreed to reimburse the state the cost of the trips.
Atlantic City has been under state financial oversight since 2010. So Langford says Christie's criticism is "tantamount to calling his own subordinates incompetent."
