Chris Collins To Coach USA Basketball Select Team
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Chris Collins, the son of former Sixers player and coach Doug Collins, has been named as the coach of the USA Men's Basketball Select Team. Collins has made some advancements in the coaching ranks recently and he is furthering his stock with this honor.
Collins has worked with the USA basketball coaching staff in both of the last Olympics in which the team has taken home the gold medal. Collins also served as an assistant at Duke for Mike Krzyzewski from 2000 to 2013 before taking the head coaching job at Northwestern, his first professional head coaching job.
The select team has been assembled to compete against the Men's team that will represent the USA in the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain from August 30th-September 14th. The two teams will be in camp together until Thursday.
Collins' select team includes Harrison Barnes, Tim Hardaway Jr., Victor Oladipo, Doug McDermott, Marcus Smart and Philadelphia native Dion Waiters among other young NBA up and comers.
Collins' roster would have included Sixers' guard Michael Carter-Williams, but the reigning Rookie of the Year was forced to decline an invitation to camp due to off-season surgery.
