Chip Kelly: 'No One On Offense Played Well'
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Chip Kelly spoke about the issues the Eagles had in Sunday's 24-14 loss to the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks at his Monday day-after press conference.
Kelly addressed some interesting topics like the Eagles' third-down issues, like going 2-for-11 on third-down conversions, Riley Cooper and the Eagles' drab tempo, especially in the fourth quarter.
"We need to run more plays, than means we need to convert on third down," Kelly said. "That means defensively, we have to get them off the field when have third-and-13, and third-and-15. We gave up too many third-and-longs and we couldn't convert any of our third-and-longs. They did a good job of converting theirs.
"No one on offense played very well. It was the entire group. The whole of us, coaches, players."
Seattle got off 85 plays to the Eagles' 45. The Eagles have now given up eight third-and-15s this season, including two during Sunday's loss.
"Wilson kept plays alive with his feet," Kelly said. "He was the difference in converting those third downs."
As for Cooper, who seemed out of sync when Mark Sanchez tried reaching him long in the fourth quarter, which resulted in an interception, Kelly was asked if he values Cooper more as a blocker down field than a receiver.
"Last year Cooper had 47 catches, this year he has 46 catches, and I think he has two drops, that's not Coop's fault, either, the ball has to be thrown to him in certain situations," Kelly said. "We're facing a lot more zone coverages this year than we had last year. People played us in man a ton more last year than they did this year. We set a record for explosive plays last year. People play more off of us this year, but I don't think that has anything to do with Coop's ability. You look at the catch total where he was last year and he's one off with three games to go, and he has two drops."
Kelly also spoke about his post-game message to his team. According to LeSean McCoy, Kelly was a little fired up after the loss. Kelly seemed to have a different take.
"I wasn't fired up after the game, so I'm confused with what LeSean told you," Kelly said. "I always tell them exactly what I think. I think that's the great thing about them and us, we have very honest, open lines of communication. We didn't play well. I think they understand that. We weren't the better team today, and the credit goes to the Seattle Seahawks."
