Chinatown Non-Profit Defends Casino Donation
Philadelphia's Chinatown Development Corporation is defending its decision to accept a donation from Harrah's Casino in Chester.
KYW 's Mike Dunn reports the Chinatown Development Corporation, CDC, accepted a donation of about $2,000 from Harrahs Chester. The CDC had actively opposed a casino being built in Center City.
But board member Andy Toy sees nothing wrong with accepting the donation from the Chester casino:
"Locationally it's far enough away that it has very little impact."
But Helen Gym, of the anti-casino group Asian Americans United, says opposition to casinos is not about location, but the impact of gambling on Asians:
"The concern really was about the fact that gambling has been devastating to Asian communities."
Gym stopped short of explicitly criticizing the CDC's acceptance of the donation. The money came from a day-long test of table games at casinos statewide.
