Chinatown Group Defends Donation from Delco Casino
A community development group in Philadelphia's Chinatown is defending its decision to accept a donation from Harrah's Casino in Chester after opposing a casino in their neighborhood.
KYW's Mike Dunn reports that the Chinatown Development Corporation ("CDC") accepted a donation of about $2,000 from Harrah's Chester. The CDC had actively opposed a casino being built in center city Philadelphia.
But board member Andy Toy sees nothing wrong with accepting the donation from the Chester casino:
"Locationally, it's far enough away that it has very little impact."
But Helen Gym, of the anti-casino group Asian Americans United, says opposition to casinos is not about location but the impact of gambling on Asians:
"The concern really was about the fact that gambling has been devastating to Asian communities."
Gym stopped short of explicitly criticizing the CDC's acceptance of the donation. The money came from a daylong test of table games at casinos statewide.
