CHESTER, Pa. (CBS) -- A suspect was killed and an officer was wounded during a shootout in the city of Chester Monday morning.
Deputy Police Commissioner Otis Blair said multiple officers responded to the 1200 block of Culhane Street for a domestic call at about 3:50 a.m.
Police say Frank McQueen was in his girlfriends home, despite the woman having a "Protection From Abuse" order against him.
Officer Matt Stewart along with three other officers visited the house for after a domestic dispute was called in.
"The woman comes running out saying 'he is running to the back door he has a gun."
Police say McQueen shot at the officers, hitting the nine year veteran in the abdomen right below his bullet proof vest.
Commissioner Joseph Bail says Steward had a text book reaction and started treating himself at the scene.
"He maintained his composure. They say he was very calm on the radio, he got the equipment out he needed to take care of himself, the trauma dressings."
The other officers returned fire, shooting McQueen multiple times.
The officer and the suspect were both taken to Crozer-Chester Medical Center, where McQueen was later pronounced dead.
Officials say the Officer Steward, who suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen, was treated and released from the hospital.
Investigators say the suspect was released on bail days ago, after being arrested for violating a Protection From Abuse order.
According to investigators, the suspect had 10 prior contacts with the Chester Police Department. Police say he had a long rap sheet that included six arrests in Philadelphia.
Commissioner Bail says a PFA order isn't enough to protect women in abuse cases.
"It needs to be looked at because you can't protect a woman with a piece of paper."
The District Attorney's office has taken over the investigation.
The DA is waiting to speak with the officer, who asked to meet tomorrow so he can spend the rest of the day recovering with his wife and two young children.
