Chester, Pa. Honors Its Firefighters Who Dealt With Massive February Blaze
By David Madden
CHESTER, Pa. (CBS) -- Officials in Chester (Delaware County) took time out today to honor city firefighters for their efforts five months ago in battling a major apartment complex fire.
Chester fire commissioner James Johnson remembers that February night, just after midnight, a couple hours after the Super Bowl ended: a call to the Wallingford Estate Apartments, where the "A" building was going up in flames.
Eventually the fire went to four alarms (see previous story).
"Men are being honored now for their performance, and I believe it to be stellar, inasmuch as they evacuated approximately 50 families from that unit without one injury," Johnson told KYW Newsradio this morning.
Members of "B" platoon, first on the scene that night, were given citations from the mayor and City Council.
Johnson says plans are in the works to offer every Chester resident not just a smoke detector but a carbon monoxide monitor, just in case.
