Chester H.S. Honors 10 Students Who Took Part In Pre-Graduation College Program
CHESTER, Pa. (CBS) - Ten graduating seniors at Chester High School were given special honors today by the Delaware County DA's office for taking part in a college "preview" program.
The ten were the first to take part in a program last summer that afforded them free tuition, and college credit, at Widener, Villanova, and Neumann universities, and Delaware County Community College.
They were given a chance to experience college firsthand, before graduating from high school, to help them make their choices going forward.
To be selected ,they had to excel academically -- something you don't hear about a lot at Chester High.
Delaware County DA Mike Green, who got the program started, notes that it is continuing to expand.
"This year we have 24 spots at colleges in Delaware County. We've actually picked up a couple of schools," Green says.
All ten students who participated in last summer's program, and received commendations today, are going on to college in the fall.
Chester High principal Dr. Darla Hammond (at left in photo) says they want to be known for more than just state basketball championships, and programs like this help motivate students to work harder on the academic front.
