Chastain Double Feature Dominates Weekend Box Office
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It was Jessica Chastain weekend at the movies.
The new horror thriller, Mama, featuring Chastain, took the box office crown on its debut weekend, earning an estimated $28 million.
In second place was the Oscar-nominated hunt-for-bin-Laden docu-drama, Zero Dark Thirty, which also stars Oscar nominee Chastain and which took in just over $17 million.
Third was the Oscar-nominated holdover, Silver Linings Playbook, with $11 million.
The weekend's other two new releases also placed in the top ten.
Broken City, the thriller with Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe, earned $9 million, good for fifth place, while The Last Stand, the action thriller welcoming back Arnold Schwarzenegger to movie stardom, was tenth with $6 million.
Overall, industry-wide totals were slightly ahead of those on the counterpart weekend a year ago.
