Ceremony At Korean War Memorial Honors Fallen From Korea, Iraq And Afghanistan
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Korean War Memorial at 2nd and Dock streets was the site of a ceremony today honoring not just Korean War dead but also those who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Korean Veterans Chapter 1509 is named after Corporal Billy McCallister, a 17-year-old boy who signed up for the war, and died there in December 1950. His two brothers, John and Tom, came to the ceremony, and although it's been over 60-years, they remembered him well.
Tom remembers the day Billy left: "He was on the stairs, and he talked to me, he said 'you have to drive the old man crazy, now. I'm leaving, You're next in line.' I remember the day, we were going to church. when we got the little letter. It hurts that he's gone. There'd probably be another dozen of us running around."
Speakers at the ceremony urged civilians and military members to be better to each other to remember those who are no longer with us.
