Local Cemetery To Host Valentine's Day Program Featuring Stories From Its Victorian Archives
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Laurel Hill Cemetery in North Philadelphia is holding a special Valentine's Day event Thursday night at its historic gatehouse, with stories culled from its Victorian archives.
Alexis Jeffcoat knows a lot about the people buried at Laurel Hill. She used to work there.
"I was always interested in the wacky, the weird, the scandalous, and so I spent some time digging through the archives, and looking through past tours and information to start gathering that and then I just fell in love with the topic."
She says Victorians were very big on fans, and how they could convey a message to a potential lover, or soon to be ex-lover. And calling cards were also instrumental.
"There's a set some guys made, that it's their name in the center and it's like a picture of a devil, and it says 'I am' whoever their name is, and then it says 'Who the devil are you?'"
