Celebrating America's Birthday In Philadelphia
By Mike Dougherty
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The 4th of July IS Philadelphia. Each year, the city strives to create a bigger and better party to celebrate America's birthday.
Once again, the festivities will end with a spectacular fireworks display over the Art Museum and a free concert on the Ben Franklin Parkway. The Roots, Philly's so-called house band, headlines the show. Queen Latifa, Daryl Hall, Joe Jonas and Common will also perform. There may even be a surprise performance or two, just like last year when Boyz II Men made an unexpected appearance.
Here's a rundown of the day's events...
10:00 - Mayor Michael Nutter and Governor Tom Corbett speak at the Celebration of Freedom Ceremony at Independence Hall
11:00 - Independence Day Parade through Old City begins
12:00 - Party on the Parkway opens
12:30 - Happy Birthday America birthday cake sampling at the Visitor's Center
1:00 - Let Freedom Ring bell ringing ceremony at the Liberty Bell
7:00 - "The largest free concert in America" and fireworks spectacular
Some good news for visitors driving into the city today: there is no parking meter enforcement, so free street parking as long as it's a legal spot. But be careful to read the signs because there are parking restrictions in place in Old City and near the Parkway.
