CDC Says Majority Of Sandy Victims Drowned
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The majority of people who died during Superstorm Sandy drowned.
That's according to a new report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The study looked at data from 117 deaths captured by American Red Cross mortality tracking during the time period from October 28 to November 30, 2012.
The results showed that drowning deaths were most common during the storm, with 45% of those occurring inside New York City's Evacuation Zone A.
The most Sandy-related deaths overall occurred in New York and New Jersey.
According to the CDC, drowning is the leading cause of deaths from hurricanes, but it is preventable with proper planning.
