CDC Releases Worrisome Statistics On Rape, Stalking And Sexual Violence
WASHINGTON, D.C. (CBS) – The CDC has released a report on sexual violence in the United States, and the results are disturbing.
According to the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS), 19.3% of women say they've been raped – that's nearly 1 in 5. And of those who reported being raped, 78.7% were first raped before the age of 25.
Additionally, 44% of women and approximately 23% of men reported experiencing some other form of sexual violence in their lifetime, which could be anything from sexual coercion to non-contact unwanted sexual experiences, and 15% of women say they've been stalked before, mostly by male perpetrators.
"Because a substantial proportion of sexual violence, stalking, and intimate partner violence is experienced at a young age, primary prevention of these forms of violence must begin early," the CDC says. "The early promotion of healthy relationships while behaviors are still relatively modifiable makes it more likely that young persons can avoid violence in their relationships."
According to the CDC, the survey is the first of its kind and is comprised of data from 2011.
