CDC Data Shows More Parents Are Getting Their Kids Vaccinated

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Parents in Pennsylvania and around the country are getting the message, that childhood vaccinations are worthwhile.
The Centers for Disease Control has released state-by-state compliance rates for vaccinations in children. While the numbers are good, they are not always perfect.
Holli Senior, a spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Department of Health, says some families decide not to get the necessary shots.
"There are two reasons why a child might not be vaccinated" she says. "One would be for medical reasons and they would need something signed by their physician or religious reasons which would be a signature or note from the parent or guardian."
Senior says when your child gets vaccinated, it benefits more the just them.
"Vaccines not only prevent disease in people who receive them, but also protect those who come into contact with unvaccinated individuals including those who are too young to get be vaccinated, or those who can't be vaccinated for medical reasons. They're among the most successful and cost-effective public health tools available for preventing disease."
Most vaccinations are required before your child's first day of classes, while some school districts give you a few months to comply.
To find out if your child is up to date on immunizations, call your school or pediatrician.
