CBS 3 Pet Project: Benefts Of Adopting A Senior Pet

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Adopting a new puppy or kitten is exciting and fun but with it comes a lot of responsibility and training. Senior dogs and cats often have just as much love to give and have some great advantages that can make them the right fit for many families.

Older pets sometimes wind up in shelters through no fault of their own, such as a change in their owner's living arrangements. A major benefit to adopting one of these cats or dogs is that it's likely they already come with some "pet manners." Unlike a puppy, these animals have already lived with a family that has likely put in some of the legwork of teaching them basic commands like sit and stay.

It's also likely that these pets are house broken which can be a challenge with a new puppy.

A dog that is around six or seven is also going to be much less rowdy than a puppy which may make him or her a great fit for families with young children or possibly for a retired couple.

They're also very grateful to the families who take them in and often develop a strong bond with the owners who have rescued them from the shelter.
