CBS 3 Anchor Chris May To Cover Republican, Democratic National Conventions
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – CBS 3 Anchor Chris May will be co-anchoring Eyewitness News at 5, 6 and 11 p.m. live from the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida August 27-30 and again from the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina September 3-6, covering the local perspective of these national events for the Delaware and Lehigh Valleys.
May's coverage begins with a preview the night before both events. In addition to his televised reports, May will be reporting for CBS Radio locally and reporting in real time on Twitter, Facebook and CBSPhilly.com. CBS 3 has always been on the cutting edge of convention coverage. In 1940, the station, then broadcasting under experimental station call lettersW3XE, was the first to broadcast coverage of a national political convention, The Republican National Convention, out of Philadelphia.
An Emmy-award-winning journalist, May has covered politics and government up close and in depth throughout his career including the 2004 and 2008 Democratic and Republican National Conventions, three State of the Union addresses, three presidential inaugurations and the Supreme Court arguments that helped settle the 2000 race for the White House. In July 2011, May sat down for a one-on-one interview with President Barack Obama at the White House during efforts to resolve the debt ceiling crisis.
May says he is particularly looking forward to witnessing the role social media will play in this year's conventions. "Social media was really in its infancy in the last Presidential election cycle," May says. "Things going on eight or even four years ago that would have fallen under the radar will now be front and center in the conversation."
An admitted political junkie, May compares his enthusiasm for political reporting to his love of sports. "Any campaign is, like sports, a competition but of ideas. The National Conventions are the Super Bowl of politics. Each one is a different experience, but, it's the game played at the highest levels. The ideas that win will shape the country, so, in effect, no story is bigger."
